All About the Owari Satsuma Mandarin Tree

4 minute read

The Owari Satsuma mandarin tree, also known simply as Satsuma mandarin tree or Satsuma orange tree, is a popular citrus tree known for its delicious, sweet, and seedless fruit. The Owari Satsuma mandarin is prized for its excellent flavor. The fruit is typically sweet and juicy with a mild and slightly tart undertone. The taste is often described as a balance between sweet and tangy, making it a favorite among citrus enthusiasts.

The Owari Satsuma mandarin tree is a compact, evergreen tree that can reach a height of 10-15 feet when planted in the ground. When grown in a pot, it can be smaller, making it an ideal choice for container gardening. The tree is known for its dark green, glossy leaves and fragrant white flowers. It produces small to medium-sized orange fruits, which are easy to peel and separate into segments. The fruit is typically seedless, but some fruits may have a few seeds. Owari Satsuma mandarins are known for their cold tolerance compared to many other citrus varieties, making them suitable for areas with mild winters.

Owari Satsuma mandarin trees are generally hardy and can tolerate short periods with temperatures down to around 28 degrees Fahrenheit. They are more cold-resistant than many other citrus varieties, which makes them suitable for regions with occasional frost. It is important to protect the tree from severe frost or cold weather by covering it or moving it indoors during extreme cold spells.

Growing an Owari Satsuma Mandarin tree in a pot is not difficult, but citrus trees in containers do have specific needs.

   - To successfully grow an Owari Satsuma mandarin tree in a pot, you will need a container with good drainage. For a starter tree or a primo sized tree, choose a pot that is at least 10-14" in size.

   - Use a well-draining potting mix that is suitable for citrus trees, such as our DIY Primo Potting Mix.

-Planting in the ground: For in-ground planting, plant the tree in a prepared area about 3x the diameter of the pot, and as deep as possible. That soil should be well-draining and loose, allowing for root growth. To plant your tree, dig a hole twice the size of the rootball. Plant at the same depth as the pot, keeping the crown of the roots just above the soil line. Water thoroughly after planting.

   - Place the potted tree in a sunny location that receives 6-8 hours of full sun daily, as citrus trees- and especially mandarin trees- require full sun for optimal fruit production.

   - Water the tree regularly, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot. You know that it's time to water when the top 1-2" of the soil is dry.

   - Fertilize the tree with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer according to the package instructions. We recommend Romeo Fertilizer and G&B Organics Citrus and Fruit Tree Fertilizer.

   - Prune the tree in the spring to maintain its shape and size. You can remove any dead or diseased branches on young citrus trees any time of the year.

   - Be prepared to protect the tree from cold temperatures by moving it indoors or covering it during frosty nights. Click here if you would like some tips on how to overwinter your citrus tree.

Growing an Owari Satsuma mandarin tree in a pot can be a rewarding experience, as you can enjoy the delicious fruit even in small spaces or less-than-ideal climates. Just ensure that you provide the tree with the proper care it needs to thrive.
